New To The Industry

Afternoon All

Jerry, thanks for the encouragement. I definitely won't be giving up. This interview was set up because I cold-called the dealership and inquired if they were in the market for additional sales personnel. I'll be making some other calls. In fact, I just saw an ad for a dealership 50 miles up the road. They've been around a long time and have a solid reputation. The last line in the ad was "please dress appropriately." So, all hope is certainly not lost.

Jeff - Your points are well taken. I'm not adverse to learning from anybody that I can learn from and relish varying points of view and concepts. And, at the end of the day, it's all about building relationships, anyway. Whether it's face to face or via email/phone. Learning to close and "ask for the order" is also paramount. That might be asking the prospect to sign or just asking the prospect to come in for an appointment. So, I'm not dismissing the GSM, by any means. And, listening to him talk, he does know about selling cars. Same for the new car SM.

My concern is to be sure that they allow me the resources I need to have at my disposal in order to be successful, especially if I'm not allowed to work the lot. And I will address that, as well as the points you noted, in the follow-up interview. Some of it we did talk about yesterday. Thanks for the feedback.

Regards,

Bill

For Real! Bill, you won't spend 2 years at any dealership in a sales role. If you can grasp the dealership's sales process and show them you're committed, you'll be promoted in no time. Dealerships have funny ways of promoting, so it might not feel like the traditional promotion, but you'll make twice as much money as you start out making by the end of year two if you stick with it.

Jeff,
Like Bill said this sounds like way more work than what income is being offered and it surely doesnt sound like there is a whole lot of support even myself having desking f&i compliance and bdc experience and I love a challenge i took one on where i am now would run far far far away from this gig this is a sinking ship before bill even gets on to take a ride. Bill dont let this deture you and venturing out to the car business not all dealerships are like this i am not sure where the nearest big city is at but you my have to travel a bit I travel 54 miles one way and make what i am worth + also enjoying my dealership and the people i work with and work for someday i cant wait to get into work and get the day started.

Then again it could be the perfect situation to get your feet wet in the car business. I wouldn't go into it thinking I'm going to change the mentality of the dealership around, but rather taking the opportunity to learn the business through the eyes of some old schoolers. This alone will could be worth it's weight. There's still a lot to be said for one on one relationship building, desking deals and closing. Many of these "techniques" are imparitive for success in sales no matter what you're selling.

I believe you have questions to ask that would help you decide and allow you to structure yourself a plan around it.

How many leads are they getting a month?
what lead sources are they working with?
what percentage of te budget goes towards online marketing?
do they and if so, what crm are they using?
whats their process for online merchandizing?

Evening All

Joe, Mike - Thanks for that awesome vote of confidence, although it might be a bit premature. But, it's certainly encouraging. One for my "attaboy file", for sure.

Christina - I understand where you're coming from and this might not be the right opportunity. However, I do plan on pursuing a follow-up interview. If nothing else, it will at least get me some additional insight into the whole process and that's certainly worth a little bit more of my time. Besides, as I noted before, whether they embrace the internet or not, these guys know the car business.

Either way, it won't deter me. I'll be contacting some other dealers. Thanks for your input.

Regards,

Bill
