I used AI to connect 7 government APIs across NHTSA, EPA, and DOE into one free VIN decoder page

AI Summary

A developer who previously worked at a dealership plugin company created a free VIN decoder tool that aggregates data from seven government APIs (NHTSA, EPA, DOE) into a single page, addressing the fragmentation problem of government vehicle data. The tool provides comprehensive vehicle information including specs, safety ratings, recalls, complaints, fuel economy, emissions, and EV charger locations without requiring signup. Early forum feedback was positive, with dealers confirming they haven't seen this level of integration offered for free before.

I worked at a dealership plugin company for 3+ years and one thing that always bugged me was how scattered government vehicle data is. NHTSA has specs, safety ratings, recalls, complaints, investigations. EPA has fuel economy and emissions. Department of Energy has EV charger locations.... Many different APIs, even more different formats, none of them connected.

So I built website that connects all of it. You enter a VIN and get everything on one page: full specs, safety ratings, fuel economy, emissions scores, cost of ownership, recalls, complaints, active investigations. For EVs it pulls in range and nearby chargers too.

Free, no signup. Here's a sample decode: 2022 HYUNDAI Ioniq 5 SE — VIN Decode Report

I used Claude and Cursor. Curious what you guys think. Anything missing that would make it more practical on the lot?
