Anytime Microsoft launches big new pieces many of us in the dealerships have to wait for our other technologies to get behind the changes before we can utilize them. For the first time ever we are seeing pretty much everything work on Windows 7 64 bit edition! We have yet to test the 32 bit edition, and I can confirm that IE8 only works with ADP's Websuite if you're using Windows 7 64 bit edition (at this time). If you install IE8 on your XP or Vista machine, Websuite will not work.

There are currently only 2 other things we've found that won't work:

  • Cisco's secure VPN connection. Cisco does offer another piece that will work on any operating system, but we are still working on configuring that one.
  • VNC doesn't work either. This is a remote desktop application our IT department uses to troubleshoot and update individual computers.
Other than those 2 applications, everything else seems to work....and work much faster!

I have only seen Windows 7 on my IT Director's desktop; which he dual boots with XP 64 bit. It is not the beta version. As a Microsoft-contracted business we get first shot at the latest releases, so we can test it with our various Microsoft servers and enterprise applications.

From what I have seen, this is Microsoft's closest offering of an Apple layout. The task bar is a little taller, but groupings are much nicer. If you have 6 Word docs open at the same time, you only see a 'W" - the Word icon - and when you hover your mouse over it, you see all the 6 Word docs that are open. Things are much more seemless, and networking is simple! Like Vista does a better job with various media types over XP, Windows 7 does an even better job - it recognizes stuff much better. My IT Director has a DVD full of drivers he is just waiting to pop in, but hasn't needed to install a single driver yet.

I always get excited about new technologies, and am an early adapter, but this one seems very solid right out of the gate. As soon as we get the VPN connection thing down, I'll be ready to put it on my work PC.
