I spoke to Jeff K the other day and he was busting my *** a bit saying that I should be bringing my writing back over here and contribute. I have not been on Refresh in a bit but always have been a big fan. So when I went to start a discussion on Leadership or training there was no category. (Jeff, can you add the category :) )

I wanted to share an article on how leaders should step back and look at their business like a consultant. How we can all get so caught up in the day to day and not be asking the right questions.

I have been talking to a few GMs who are looking for me to help them find a way to better grow their employees and help their DP be more effective.

So I ask the forum, How can we better train management in the dealerships to become better leaders for their teams?

Let me know. love to see what people say

Glenn,

So glad you've decided to join the real first original online community for dealers and the industry! ;)

Ask and you shall receive...

I have modified a current thread to include "leadership". Industry News, Resources, Webinars & Leadership Thanks for the suggestion! Keep in mind that if you have a full "article" around best practices, industry trends and such - the DealerRefresh Blog would be better suited. The invitation for a Glenn Pasch post on the blog is always standing.

You propose quite the question Glenn - "How can we better train management in the dealerships to become better leaders for their teams?"

My smart-ass answer to most GM's, Owners, and Principles would be to SHOW UP!

There's nothing more frustrating than taking your own time to structure and schedule a full training session around a particular subject or best practice for the sales and BDC team, only to find out that the GM and sales managers never attended. Boy would that piss me off. Especially when often enough they needed more training than their sales and BDC staff.

I realize my answer is quite general but at the same time, it's the often the first step needed step that's too often overlooked.

Another tip - schedule training OFF SITE while making sure all phones are check at the front door. Most GM's were brought up in the showroom and are very sensitive to distractions. You need undivided attentions!!

Thanks again for joining us Glenn. I look forward to your continued participation.

BTW - did we ever share the presentation we did together around Reputation Management and best practices?

Thanks Jeff. Yes I did share that presentation as well as used it to build new ones. I agree with your comment. Showing up is a first step. If leadership is not willing to show that the training is important to them, how will staff take it? I had the pleasure of presenting to a large group and ALL the top leadership was there and not only were they present, they participated and led much of the discussion. you could see that the training was important and note taking was flying. We continue to work with this group on how to implement, which is a whole other topic where dealers could improve.

thanks for the offer of a blog. I would be honored.

reminds me of: The Black Hole in Sales Training

After we spend $$ on training reps, weeks later we are back to where we started.

Question.
Who's training the managers to be leaders?

Joe, I get push back on investing in any long term training. It is seen as a cost. not sure if it because dealers still look at employees as transitory but I think investing in your team actually retains employees. I will keep pushing this because speaking to a few dealers who get training, they are asking for help on how to do it correctly and are seeing great results
