Starting with the 2027 model year, federal “impaired driving prevention” rules effectively mandate a software-based kill switch in every new vehicle, putting always-on monitoring and the power to disable a car in the hands of algorithms rather than drivers. While framed as safety, normalizing this level of in-vehicle surveillance and remote control is a serious step toward turning personally owned cars into regulated endpoints, and that should concern anyone who cares about customer trust, civil liberties, and the future of our industry.

Guess older cars are going to go waaaaay up in value!

It won't stop there. Imagine your own home not letting you leave because it senses you had too much to drink, or maybe you posted something on FB that was not of popular opinion. Automated House Arrest. Controlled by Ai and in YOUR best interest, of course.
"We're just looking out for your safety folks."

The scarier part is thinking about what happens if/when Chinese vehicles eventually make it stateside and have to follow these same requirements. The CCP will be more than happy to build in kill-switch technology because now they won't even have to pretend they aren't doing it.

Automotive professionals express alarm over a 2027 federal mandate requiring software-based kill switches in all new vehicles, framed as impaired driving prevention but criticized as surveillance and remote control technology that could increase costs and threaten civil liberties. Concerns escalate from privacy issues to broader fears about government and foreign adversaries using kill-switch technology for social control, with participants speculating that the regulatory burden will drive demand for older vehicles and alternative technologies like flying cars. The thread reflects industry anxiety about regulation driving up vehicle prices and repair costs while normalizing unprecedented monitoring of personally owned vehicles.
